So [livejournal.com profile] kazzy24 does a writing challenge each...week?...and this time I decided to give it a try. Rules are here, and this week's list of words is as follows:

school
reprimand
comparison
worst
dirty
washing machine
glasses
commanding
shell
perfume

That said, here's my atrocity drabble:

Mornings

Getting up on school days was probably his least favorite thing to do. Mornings were fine when he could get up in his own time, but they were worst when one of his parents had to shake him into wakefulness. There wasn't even time to stretch on those mornings, it was all go; any lack of speed resulted in a reprimand.

One commanding voice or another would prod him along, reminding him to put on his glasses, go to the bathroom, get in the shower, remember to scrub his neck, and for shit's sake, HURRY.

The shower, he had to admit, always helped to wake him up fully. The warmth of the water in comparison to the chill of the autumn air was huge, and a luxury he preferred to wallow in for a few minutes. And too, his parents didn't rush him through it; he was allowed to stand under the pounding stream and enjoy it for a few minutes before washing himself and hopping out.

Once he was clean, Mom and Dad were back to rushing him along, always reminding him to dry himself completely, use deodorant - this puberty thing was absolutely irritating - and to take off those jeans because they're dirty and going in the washing machine later.

Sometimes he'd catch sight of the odds-and-ends dish on the bathroom counter while getting the hated deodorant and wonder idly why animals - like the snail that once occupied that big shell - never had to worry about things like being clean and going to school.

And then he'd see his mom's perfume bottle, and would suddenly be thankful he was a boy. Girls, cute though they often were, were absolutely crazy.
