psyche29: A brown eye with rainbow eyeliner all around it (unless I'm wrong)

But it doesn't make sense...

Someone at work decided he wanted to update our cover sheet we send out with faxes. Which is fine, I don't mind that a bit. I do that kind of crap all the time. I'm good at it.

It was sent as an attachment by this person, who indicated in his email to all of us that it was approved by both our manager and our director. Which it was, of course, but even that fact is a woeful commentary on the literary genius - or lack, thereof - of the people for and with whom I work.

Why, you ask? Because this was the disclaimer on the bottom (edited to leave out the hospital name, since this is an unlocked journal):

The Information contained in this facsimile message is the privileged and confidential property of [this particular hospital], intended for the use of the individual or entity named above. If the reader of this message is not intended recipient or the employee or agent responsible to deliver it to the intended recipient, you are hereby notified that any dissemination, distribution or copying of this communication in error, please notify us immediately by telephone and return the original message to us at the above address via the U.S. Postal Service. Thank you.

Yes, I know hardly anybody reads the legal disclaimer stuff. That doesn't, however, mean we should send it out as it is, right? Someone back me up here - we're not idiots, why should we advertise that we are? And even if no one reads it, I would still know it's wrong. And I don't like being wrong.

So I sent an email back, but only to the person who sent it out to begin with, because if it was he who made it, then I don't want to embarrass him, right? Something about ethics, and treating others the way you want to be treated, blah, blah, blah... ANYWAY, I sent one back, and while it's totally know-it-all and stuff, it still addresses the problem, right? I had the nicest person on the floor read it for me to make sure it wasn't too mean:

It looks great, I love it with the new logo and everything. Just one thing…the sentence I’ve highlighted below in red makes no grammatical sense.

"The Information contained in this facsimile message is the privileged and confidential property of [this particular hospital], intended for the use of the individual or entity named above. If the reader of this message is not intended recipient or the employee or agent responsible to deliver it to the intended recipient, you are hereby notified that any dissemination, distribution or copying of this communication in error, please notify us immediately by telephone and return the original message to us at the above address via the U.S. Postal Service. Thank you."

Is there a way we can change it so that there’s something in there about what’s wrong with "any dissemination, distribution or copying of this communication?" Whether it’s "strictly prohibited" or "illegal" or "will result in some serious problems," etc.; something should be there to complete that sentence in a way that indicates those things are not OK. There should also be another, separate sentence for "If you have received this communication in error..." And since I’m being swotty, I may as well point out that it should say "If the reader of this message is not the intended recipient..."

It’s just something to consider before we begin sending them out en masse. I hope that was clear; I can explain what I mean again if not. But the rest of it is way better than what I could have done – good job!

She said it wasn't mean and if she was receiving it, she wouldn't be offended at all - but she knows me and is well aware that I wouldn't be sending it to be mean. I guess I'm worried on two levels - one for the implied idiocy if we all send it out as it is, and another for the guy who went to the trouble to update it.

Sometimes I wish I could put up a huge sign that says something to the effect of, "FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, ASK ME - OR ANYBODY - TO PROOFREAD OFFICIAL COMMUNICATIONS BEFORE YOU SEND THEM OUTSIDE THE INSTITUTION!" [/rant]

ANYWAY.

I have a week of vacation coming up - this Friday all the way through the eleventh. I am definitely looking forward to some time away from the job.

Not too much else is new. Amanda has a job in the shoe department at Wal*Mart. She hates it, but it's a job for now.

Mikey's attending a YMCA day camp this week; yesterday was his first day and he was gone before his head hit the pillow last night. Definitely a good thing, in my book. XD.

I watched "Holes" on my iPod today while keying, and now I have that little tune stuck in my head.

"If only, if only," the woodpecker sighs,
"The bark on the tree was as soft as the skies."
While the wolf waits below, hungry and lonely,
he cries to the moon, "If only, if only."

It's a gorgeous little tune, but I've been singing it all afternoon. And I forgot the cord today, so I can't recharge the iPod and listen to something else till I get home. *sulks*

Oh, and Matt called; he said it's over ninety degrees out right now. Add in the dew point at somewhere above seventy and we have a hot, disgustingly sticky day on our hands, folks. The chewy substance masquerading as air will be stifling in the oven masquerading as my bedroom...in one of the few houses left with no air conditioning. *sigh*

okay I read the bit about the grammer thing, but I suck at grammer so I couldn't find the error O.o.

I don't think it sounded mean either though. :)

Yes, it has been just nasty outside today. Our air quality was awful. We went to Target today and it was 91 degrees with the dew point. Ewww.

No worries. XD. I know I can't expect that everyone will see the errors - I just really think people should be required to have someone who DOES see the errors proofread before sending official things out. And unfortunately, I work for several people who are highly incapable of such intricacies. *sigh*

It was 90 degrees WITHOUT the dew point when I got in the car this evening! *swipes brow across forehead*

Totally. If they can't do it themselves they should have someone else do it.

ICK!!! Today is suppose to be nice, but this weekend is going to be major suckage again. BLAH!

Proofreading is so importante! I don't think you sound mean at all. It's not like you publicly humiliated him for your evil purposes. ;-)

Thank you!!

awww! I don't think your reply sounded mean at all. It's too bad the guy didn't have a proofreader though...

My house doesn't have air conditioning either! Not that we need it though... it's about 60 degrees outside and just stopped raining. I think it'd be nice to switch weather for a day or something! I wouldn't mind, I'm used to hot weather right now because I just came back from a week in practically a desert, building houses in the sun :p
