Mmm, just a basic update, but I'll cut for length. ;)
It was a good weekend. Matt took Mikey on Friday to order new glasses. He also had them write down his pupil width and prescription; we're going to order a couple pair online as well - they're only $8.00 a pair on this one site, which is fine, as they'll only be backup to his normal pair. We're hoping his normal pair will be in before Thursday, which is picture day at his school.
While they were at the eye doctor on Friday, they saw Mikey's great-grandpa, so that was a happy meeting. Erv was so pleased to see Mike and be proud of him for doing well in school so far. Very cool.
When I got home from work, we hauled our library books back to the library, and I got the four that were being held for me. I've started two of them; so far, I've gotten a few chapters in with A Game of Thrones (George R.R. Martin). It's a little slow, but I'm already intrigued. There's a lot going on, and I've only finished Catelyn. We'll see how it goes.
I'm also halfway through the first chapter of Letter to a Christian Nation (Sam Harris). A lot of smart points in it, and serious words about serious things. I'm not even that far in and I'm already reevaluating how I see things, why I see them the way I do. I think to get the most out of this book, I'll need to find some quiet time with it, away from husband and child and people in general.
Only read the blurbs on the inside flaps of A Wrinkle In Time (Madeleine L'Engle) and The Stolen Child (Keith Donohue), but both look promising.
Friday night, we went to a Mexican place called Acapulco. And man, I HIGHLY recommend it. It was probably the closest to authentic that we've ever been. They used a white cheese, this really, really rich stuff, I think it's called Oaxaca... It was so, so amazingly good.
BUT...and I can't believe I'm about to say this...it was so rich, it was almost TOO much cheese. *slaps hand over mouth*
I KNOW. CHEESE IS MY FAVORITE FOOD IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD AND I DARED TO PRONOUNCE THIS ONE AS TOO MUCH!!! *cries* But it really, really was too much flavor for me.
Then again, if you're not a supertaster like me and you enjoy cheese, you'll probably be just fine with it. I loved it, I just think that next time, I'll have to ask them to go light on it. I had a beef hard shell taco and two cheese enchiladas, and all three were made with the Oaxaca cheese. The enchiladas were easier because the cheese was melted; the taco was fabulous, but the cheese was harder to handle.
Hubby had stuffed poblano peppers and decided he'll probably order them every time we go there. ;)
On Saturday, several theatres were having a Toy Story double feature in 3D for the price of one ticket, so we took Mikey. It was a lot of fun, and amusing to hear all the kids laughing, and the adults, too. Lots of popcorn and soda...there's just something extra delicious about movie theatre popcorn.
After that, we went to Microcenter and Matt picked up a few things, then we drove around for a bit before going for dinner at Olive Garden. MAN, that was a lot of food - but it was SOOO good.
And yesterday we just ran a few errands; we hit Fleet Farm and Menards and Target, then went over to Bunny and John's to hang out for a bit. Had bean soup. I didn't like it, but the little I ate was filling enough. After that we went home and just hung out till nearly bedtime. Then came the fun task of chucking the kid in the shower and forcing him to wash.
He's eleven years old; shouldn't he be past the "hates bathing" stage? Thoughts?
So now it's back to work. The new manager starts today. Her name, from what I've been told, is Victoria. She was born in South Africa, her husband is a lawyer and according to one of the other managers, she's very staff-centered, very good. But the same manager has mentioned that she's in for a rude awakening, because she comes from a place where everything worked perfectly - the systems all ran properly, employees were courteous and productive and wonderful, and people paid their bills in a timely manner. *snorts* This should be interesting to watch.
She's got orientation today and probably tomorrow, so we haven't met her yet, and I've already had one of my problem children asking me how we're supposed to request time off. *rolls eyes* I told him that we're just going to keep on keeping on, exactly as we have been, until this manager is able to sit and talk with me. Because for real - no one's bothered about me and my peeps for the last ten months, why should we assume they'll start now? It's better to keep the status quo until the person in semi-charge (me, in this case) has a chance to brief the new kid on the block.
Is it wrong that it's gonna burn my ass a little bit if this new manager is younger than I am on top of needing me to teach her everything under the sun? Sorry. I have issues with the whole younger-than-me-knows-less-than-me-but-gets-paid-more-than-me thing. I know it happens everywhere, I'm just saying.
Tonight we're heading over to
loveweasleys04's place to watch the Viking/Packer game. It'll just be me and hubby rooting for the Vikes, and maybe Dana, if he's feeling brave enough to risk his lovely wife's wrath... *LOL* Otherwise it'll be a Packer crowd, but that's OK, I think it'll be fun. We'll have to leave early since Mikey goes to bed at nine-thirty, but I still think it'll be a good time.
Beth, should we be bringing anything? Dessert? Beer? Soda? I cannot remember to save my life; let me know so we can fetch it.
I ate a "chocolate banana split" Pop Tart this morning. It was like going into sugar shock - I won't be eating those again, that's for sure. Mikey loved his, I'm sure, but it was too much for me.
Several weeks ago, actually, we figured out this supertaster thing. Everything makes a lot more sense now in regards to what I eat, what I don't, why I can't handle some things and why I'm so picky about how I eat others. It explains why I look at the rest of y'all like you're batshit crazy when you put salt and other things all over your food; to me, it tastes great as it is. It's even too much, oftentimes.
It's just really nice to finally GET it, to have the food weirdness settle into place. I'll still be strange about it, of course, and think the rest of you are strange too - but at least now I understand. XD.
I think that's the majority of it for now...I may have more to say later. *lol*

Date: 2009-10-05 04:55 pm (UTC)I read that Letter to a Christian Nation when I was in high school and was very shaken up by it. It really changed the way I thought about religion. Before that, I had been able to overlook more of the problematic aspects of public Christianity by telling myself I wasn't like that, but that's not enough. Any way, I need to read it again, but wanna talk about it when you finish?
Haha, it's funny to hear everyone here so torn over Vikings/Favre vs. Packers. Andrew doesn't know who to root for.

Date: 2009-10-05 11:50 pm (UTC)I think I just subtracted half the ingredients! *LOL* I might have to stick with a taco salad or cheese enchiladas - I am a connoisseur of the simple stuff! XD.

Date: 2009-10-05 11:47 pm (UTC)And yeah - I'll probably want to talk about the book when I'm done...will probably need to do so. I'm already sitting there going, "Well, wow. It's so thought out, and all I can do is say that I believe in God because I just do, and that doesn't seem good enough now." It's...disconcerting.
I bet it's as talked about there as it is here! I love listening to Beth, she's so hardcore against Favre now, and of course against the Vikings. *hee* It'll be fun - going over there soon.

Date: 2009-10-05 05:38 pm (UTC)So you're a Vikings girl. *shakes head* Lucky I still like you. ; ) J/k, but I am a Packers girl and always have been.
OMG, you used my favorite flamethrower quote!! That's awesome.

Date: 2009-10-05 11:53 pm (UTC)I'm a Minnesota hometown girl, born and raised. The Vikes are my hometown team, just like the Twins, the Wild, the Timberwolves. I appreciate other teams here and there, but I'm a hometown girl first and foremost. *hee*
George Carlin FTW!!

Date: 2009-10-05 06:29 pm (UTC)Okay they are pretty loaded and it is a lot of information to remember. Especially when they get into the backstory and the different Houses. There is an index in the back that will help remember characters and relations. Ask me if you have any questions. What are your thought so far?
SEE YOU TONIGHT! I CAN'T WAIT! :D

Date: 2009-10-05 06:33 pm (UTC)LOL! He wore a Packer shirt to work today. I am only a little afraid for his life. If he dies he will be a martyr...:p
We have beer, chips and salsa, and chicken wings. Chantay is bringing something, but it is totally up to you if you want to bring something :)

Date: 2009-10-11 11:32 am (UTC)Glad Mikey got his new glasses sorted. Did they come in time for picture day? And did you manage to order some back-up pairs online?
Can't wait to see his school photos. ^_^
Yay for starting GoT, I'm glad you're liking it so far. I'm now on the first chapter of the third book. I'll comment on your other thoughts as I get to the entries. ^_~
Sounds like you had a good time at Acapulco; I wish we had a decent Mexican place around here.
OMG ... blasphemy ... too much cheese? Is that even possible! *rotfl*
I found the supertaster thing really interesting.
Sounds like you had fun seeing the Toy Story double feature in 3D. And you're right, nothing beats movie theater popcorn.
Its nice just to chill out with family, isn't it. glad you had fun at Bunny and John's.
He's eleven years old; shouldn't he be past the "hates bathing" stage? Thoughts?
No, I think that'd be fairly typical of an eleven year-old boy and is probably only going to get worse as he hits his teens. That is until he notices girls and wants to impress them by looking/ smelling good.
But then again, what do I know ... I have a six-year-old boy who loves bathing and cleaning his room! *lol*
I saw your later comment on the new manager, and I'm glad she's fitting in well. Hopefully, things at work will start to improve for you now.
Hope you had fun at Beth's. I think if I had friends I could watch sports with etc. I'd probablly like football a lot more. Than again, American football seems a lot more interesting than English soccer.

They came in the day before picture day, so yay there. We haven't ordered the backup pair yet, but we will soon.
OMG ... blasphemy ... too much cheese? Is that even possible! *rotfl*
IKR?!??!!! *LOL*
And you're right, nothing beats movie theater popcorn.
Word.
But then again, what do I know ... I have a six-year-old boy who loves bathing and cleaning his room! *lol*
I envy you! *rotfl*
American football seems a lot more interesting than English soccer.
Christ. ANYTHING'S better than soccer! Except maybe golf.

Well, stranger things have happened, I suppose! *lol*
I envy you! *rotfl*
*rotfl*
You wouldn't when he's getting in trouble at school for messing around in the toilets with the other boys. *rolleyes*
Christ. ANYTHING'S better than soccer! Except maybe golf.
God, golf is so boring. Cricket sucks too, and I don't like Snooker. Yeah, basically, I don't like sports. *lol*
